Hello artists! It’s been a long time since I last wrote anything, and I think it’s about time I told you a bit more about myself again. Don’t you think?
Some of you might think I’ve been illustrating all my life, but that’s not the case.
I actually studied Fine Art in Seville in 1992. I lived in Huelva with my parents and, after finishing secondary school, I went to Seville to study Fine Art, because I’d always loved drawing and painting and it was what I was best at. So, right in the middle of Expo ’92, I arrived in Seville and enrolled at the Santa Isabel de Hungría Faculty on Calle Laraña. Right in the city centre, very close to Calle Sierpes and next to Plaza de la Encarnación. Do you know where that is?
Well, I started at the university in Seville full of enthusiasm, after sitting an entrance exam – as was the custom back then – in which I had to prove I could paint and draw by completing two exercises they set us (one with pastels and the other with charcoal). After being really nervous, thinking I wouldn’t pass the tests – because I was up against classmates who’d been sitting the exams for years and hadn’t managed to get in – it turned out I got one of the highest marks in my year and BOOM!!!!, I got in.
I was at university until halfway through my third year, and then one day I suddenly asked myself what I was doing there, so I decided to cancel my enrolment and drop out. You’re probably thinking: ‘Noooooooo! Why?’
Well, yes, I gave it up because I thought I was going to learn something, and that wasn’t the case. In a degree where creativity and freedom of expression are supposed to be paramount, that just wasn’t happening. So I decided it wasn’t the right time or place to carry on with it, and I dropped out. My parents took it very badly, but it didn’t come to blows!
I spent years painting on my own, working on other things, and trying to figure out what to do with my life. It was a tough time where I had to face lots of changes and important decisions that eventually led me to Madrid, where I worked for a few years at an animation studio.
And you might say, ‘Animation?’… Well, yes. I’ve always loved the world of animation. Ever since I was very young, I’ve loved cartoons on the telly and always thought that one day I’d end up doing that. I wanted to be a cartoon animator.
And you might say, ‘Animation?’… Well, yes. I’ve always loved the world of animation. Ever since I was very young, I’ve loved cartoons on the telly and I always thought that one day I’d end up doing that. I wanted to be a cartoon animator.
I signed up for an animation course in Almonte, Huelva, and after a few months of learning the basic techniques of animation, I went to Madrid with my portfolio under my arm and turned up at a studio that had been recommended to me. And that’s where I got in; it was 2001, and I started working as a cartoon in-betweener at the ‘12 Pingüinos’ animation studio, drawing thousands of frames on a light table where I animated characters such as ‘Las tres Mellizas’; it was a cartoon series broadcast on a Barcelona TV channel.
I stayed there for seven years, working long hours from Monday to Sunday. I worked long hours and was paid very little; that really was a ‘slave job’; I ended up exhausted and decided I had to do something else. As much as I loved drawing, I couldn’t carry on like that. So I gave it up…
In my next blog post, I’ll tell you all about my next adventure!
Thanks for reading and for being there!
¿No?
