Lulo and Mulán, my companions on this journey

Some people think that inspiration strikes suddenly, like a bolt of lightning. I, on the other hand, believe that it almost always has four legs.

Lulo and Mulán have been walking by my side for years. They’re there on walks through the countryside around Toledo, during afternoons spent studying, in moments of silence, and even on days when ideas seem to be hiding. They’re the kind of company that asks for nothing and, precisely because of that, gives everything.

Whilst I’m drawing or painting, they rest nearby, attentive to the sound of a pencil on paper or the brush brushing against the wood. They know nothing of exhibitions, publishers or deadlines, but they do understand the most important language of all: that of calm, loyalty and presence.

Often, the best ideas come to me whilst out for a walk with them. You only have to watch how they stop to explore a new scent, how they look at the world with undimmed curiosity, or how they find joy in the simplest things. That ability to live in the moment is a lesson I try to bring to my work as an illustrator and painter too.

In such a creative profession, where we spend so many hours on our own, having companions like Lulo and Mulán is a gift. They remind me that creating is also about looking slowly, listening to the silence and leaving space for the imagination to breathe.

They don’t appear in the signature on my paintings or in the credits of my books, but, in some way, they’re always there. In every illustration, every landscape and every story, there’s a small trace of all those walks we’ve shared.

They say that dogs leave their mark on the hearts of those who love them. I’d add that they also leave their mark on the works we create.

Thank you, Lulo. Thank you, Mulán. For reminding me, every day, that beauty is often found in the simplest things and that the best journey is always the one taken in good company.

Lulo y Mulán, mis compañeros de camino

Hay quien piensa que la inspiración llega de repente, como un relámpago. Yo, en cambio, creo que casi siempre tiene cuatro patas.

Lulo y Mulán llevan años caminando a mi lado. Están presentes en los paseos por los campos de Toledo, en las tardes de estudio, en los momentos de silencio y también en los días en los que las ideas parecen esconderse. Son esa compañía que no exige nada y, precisamente por eso, lo da todo.

Mientras dibujo o pinto, ellos descansan cerca, atentos al sonido de un lápiz sobre el papel o al roce del pincel sobre la madera. No entienden de exposiciones, editoriales o fechas de entrega, pero sí conocen el lenguaje más importante: el de la calma, la lealtad y la presencia.

Muchas veces, las mejores ideas nacen durante un paseo con ellos. Basta con observar cómo se detienen a descubrir un olor nuevo, cómo miran el mundo con una curiosidad intacta o cómo celebran las cosas más sencillas. Esa capacidad para vivir el presente es una lección que intento llevar también a mi trabajo como ilustrador y pintor.

En un oficio tan creativo, donde pasamos tantas horas a solas, tener compañeros como Lulo y Mulán es un regalo. Me recuerdan que crear también consiste en mirar despacio, escuchar el silencio y dejar espacio para que la imaginación respire.

No aparecen en la firma de mis cuadros ni en los créditos de mis libros, pero, de algún modo, siempre están ahí. En cada ilustración, en cada paisaje y en cada historia hay un pequeño rastro de todos esos paseos compartidos.

Dicen que los perros dejan huellas en el corazón de quienes los quieren. Yo añadiría que también dejan huellas en las obras que creamos.

Gracias, Lulo. Gracias, Mulán. Por recordarme, cada día, que la belleza suele encontrarse en las cosas más sencillas y que el mejor viaje siempre es el que se hace en buena compañía.
