Hello, creative family!

Today I’m going to tell you about something which, at first glance, has nothing to do with my work as an illustrator and painter; yet I believe it complements my creative profession very well because it gives me new ideas and inspiration.

It turns out that when I left the Fine Arts degree course in Seville, many, many years ago, I moved to Madrid and then to Toledo, and after spending several years working in the world of animation, I discovered that I loved young children and their whole world full of magic and creativity, so I decided to study a two-year higher-level vocational course to become a nursery teacher.

I spent seven wonderful years working at a nursery school in a village in Toledo, where I learnt that life is lived ‘here and now’. Young children teach you to focus on the here and now. For them, there is no past or future. There is only the present, and they try to enjoy the moment to the full. Their lives are pure play. They can spend the whole day playing non-stop without ever getting bored. And that’s something wonderful, which, sadly, we stop doing as we grow up. We become serious, responsible adults who only know how to work, when what we should be doing is carrying on playing and enjoying life and our work ‘as if there were no tomorrow’.

My years as a nursery teacher reconnected me with my inner child. I thought I’d lost it, but I hadn’t. There it was, slumbering inside me, waiting to play with me again. And it was during those years that I discovered the power of reading and picture books in the world of children. I discovered children’s literature and the power of illustrations in books, and I decided to become an illustrator.

And so began a new chapter in my life, which I’ll continue to tell you about in my next post...

Hola familia creativa!

Hoy os voy a contar algo que, a simple vista, no tiene nada que ver con mi faceta de ilustrador y pintor, y sin embargo, creo que complementa muy bien la parte de mi profesión de creador porque me aporta ideas nuevas e inspiración.

Pues resulta que cuando dejé Bellas Artes, en Sevilla, hace muuuuuuuuuchos años atrás, me fui a vivir a Madrid y luego a Toledo, y después de estar varios años trabajando en el mundo de la Animación descubrí que me encantaban los niños pequeños y todo su mundo lleno de magia y creatividad y decidí estudiar un módulo de grado Superior durante dos años, para convertirme en Educador Infantil.

Estuve trabajando durante siete maravillosos años en una escuela infantil, en un pueblo de Toledo, donde aprendí que la vida se vive "aquí y ahora". Los niños pequeños te enseñan a centrarte en el aquí y el ahora. Para ellos no hay pasado ni futuro. Hay presente y tratan de disfrutar el momento al máximo. Su vida es puro juego. Pueden pasarse el día jugando sin parar que no se casan nunca. Y eso es algo maravilloso, que desgraciadamente cuando crecemos dejamos de hacer. Nos convertimos en adultos serios y responsables que sólo saben trabajar, cuando lo que deberíamos hacer es seguir jugando y gozando de la vida y de nuestro trabajo como "si no hubiera un mañana".

Mis años como educador infantil, me volvieron a conectar con mi niño interior. Creía que lo había perdido, pero no. Ahí estaba, dormido en mi interior esperando volver a jugar conmigo. Y fue en esos años en los que descubrí el poder de la lectura y los libros ilustrados en el mundo infantil. Descubrí la literatura infantil y el poder de las ilustraciones en los libros y decidí convertirme en ilustrador.
